Serotonin and Neurodivergent Children
What Every Mum Needs to Know
Have you ever noticed your child go from calm to overwhelmed in what feels like seconds?
Or wondered why some days feel smooth …. and others feel like an emotional minefield?
And perhaps you’ve asked yourself: “Is this just part of their neurodivergence or could something else be going on?”
If you’re raising a neurodivergent child, you will likely recognise the signs: the big feelings, the sensory overwhelm, the difficulty sleeping, the anxiety that can bubble up unexpectedly.
As a family nutritionist and a mum to an AuDHD daughter, I want to expand on an interesting fact about our body:
Our mood is directly affected by our levels of serotonin in the body. This neurotransmitter is mainly produced in the gut.
In fact around 90% of serotonin is made in the gut so understanding the connection between the gut and the brain is very important.
This connection means that what’s happening in your child’s gut can significantly influence their mood, emotional regulation, anxiety levels and sleep patterns.
What is serotonin and why does it matter so much?
Serotonin is often called the “feel-good” neurotransmitter but in reality, it’s more like the brain’s emotional stabiliser.
It helps to:
- Move through big feelings more easily
- Feel calmer and less anxious
- Sleep more deeply
- Process sensory input without overload
- Pause before reacting
Now, let me ask you a question:
Does your child find it hard to “come back down” once they’re upset?
Do small things sometimes trigger very big reactions?
These can be clues that serotonin balance may need support.
Why neurodivergent children can be more sensitive
Neurodivergent children often have unique biochemistry.
This can include differences in:
- Neurotransmitter production
- Nutrient absorption
- Genetic pathways linked to serotonin
This means that their baseline may already be more sensitive.
You might notice:
- Bigger emotional responses
- Heightened sensory sensitivities
- Variable sleep patterns
- Anxiety that seems to come in waves
And then there’s food…
Have you ever noticed a shift after certain meals?
Do things tend to unravel after beige, carb-heavy meals like pizza, chips, or pasta?
Do you see more tears, irritability, or dysregulation later in the day?
You are not imagining it and you are certainly not alone.
Here’s what’s happening inside the body:
- High-carb meals can cause a quick rise in blood sugar
- This can temporarily boost tryptophan (used to make serotonin)
- You might even see a short window of calm
But then…
- Blood sugar drops
- Stress hormones rise
- The nervous system becomes more reactive
And for a neurodivergent child, that drop can feel huge.
So how do we support a steady supply of serotonin?
The goal is consistency and stability.
1. Is the gut being supported?
Start with what they will eat and build from there. Perhaps adding a small portion of something new, alongside their familiar foods.
Focus on fibre, which feeds beneficial gut bacteria.
It is important to start slowly to avoid digestive discomfort. Start with oats, berries and carrots or cucumbers if that feels possible.
Ensure good hydration, which supports digestion, bowel movements and overall gut function. If plain water is tricky, try adding a slice of fruit for flavour (using a straw to protect the teeth) or try a favourite cup.
Keep mealtimes as calm as possible. The gut and nervous system are so closely linked.
2. Are they getting enough protein?
Serotonin is made from tryptophan, found in protein.
You will find protein in foods such as:
- Eggs
- Chicken
- Fish
- Yogurt
- Tofu
What does your child’s breakfast look like?
A protein-rich start can make a noticeable difference to mood and resilience. Even if it is a boiled egg or some nut butter on a toast alongside their favourite breakfast.
3. Is blood sugar staying in balance?
Balanced meals = more stable emotions.
Instead of carb-heavy meals on their own, try pairing:
- Carbs + protein + healthy fats
– Could a small tweak to meals reduce those afternoon crashes?
4. Are key nutrients in place?
Certain nutrients are essential for making serotonin in the brain:
- Vitamin B6
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Iron
Low levels can make emotional regulation that much harder.
5. Does their nervous system feel safe?
Serotonin isn’t just about food, it’s about how the brain perceives the world.
Ask yourself:
- Do they have predictable routines?
- Are transitions supported (this can be such a trigger especially for PDA children)?
- Are they getting natural daylight each day?
These all send signals of safety to the brain.
And what about you?
Let’s pause for a moment.
How are you feeling at the end of the day?
Calm… or completely depleted?
Because your nervous system is doing a lot:
- Holding space for big emotions
- Managing unpredictability
- Constantly adapting
If your serotonin is low (which can be common in stress or perimenopause), everything feels harder.

we can respond with more clarity, more compassion… and more confidence.
